We arrived at JFK Airport on Saturday afternoon and took a cab to our
hotel on 62nd Street. We had booked the Bentley Hotel through our
Travel Agents, with the flights. The accommodation was adequate, the
staff were very friendly, but a hotel nearer Times Square / Broadway
would have been much better. However, this was not really a problem,
it just added to the taxi fares we paid over the next few days!
Having checked in, we were ready for action and took a cab to the
Empire State Building where we queued for a while and went through
the high security checks. Penny had visited New York in 1963, but
this was my first visit. It was late afternoon and a clear sunny day,
so the views from the top of the building were great. On arrival back
at street level we made our way to view the Flat Iron Building and
Times Square, then found an Italian restaurant for a fine meal.
On Sunday we had pre-booked to visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis
Island and spent most of the day on our trip.

In the evening we had an Internet booking for the Broadway Show Mama
Mia! This was a tremendous show, which we and the rest of the
audience hugely enjoyed and would love to see it through again.
Monday saw us walking most of the day, first in Central Park, then
through Times Square onto the Rockefeller Institute, on to Grand
Central Station, continuing to the United Nations Building, caught a
cab to Ground Zero, then another cab to Macys, before walking to 57th
Street and eating at the Hard Rock Cafe. We then took another cab
back to our Hotel and retired exhausted to bed.
Tuesday morning we ate breakfast at the local diner, then took a cab
to the American Museum of Natural History, where we spent a very
interesting time at two presentation shows in the Hayden Planetarium,
then at a Butterfly exhibit, which involved entering a tropical
garden with live butterflies. There were also many exhibits around
the Museum, to fill our morning. We walked to the nearby Central Park
and on reaching the other side of the Park hailed a taxi back to the
Hotel, where we collected our luggage and a car took us to JFK
Airport, for the evening flight to Heathrow.
A tremendous holiday, which will remain as very happy times in our memories.
